We have all heard about global warming and how our planet is in need of our help. But where do we start? With all the complexities that are behind Earth’s struggle, here are three simple things you can implement in your life to help our environment.
1. Use a Reusable Water Bottle
Using a reusable water bottle is one of the things we always hear and it seems pointless but there is a lot that goes behind plastic water bottle usage. According to the Earth Policy Institute, “Making bottles to meet Americans’ demand for bottled water requires more than 17 million barrels of oil annually, enough to fuel more than 1 million U.S. cars for a year”. Most of the plastic water bottles used in the United States become garbage or litter with some ending up in the ocean as well. Using a reusable water bottle would help decrease the amount of litter and the demand for bottled water. Additionally, it is super easy to make the switch! You can find a reusable water bottle in almost any store and can always refill your bottle with TBLS’ many water fountains. I asked some students who currently use a reusable water bottle if they are happy with their choice and Class II discipula Kade J. said, “I love my water bottle… it saves me money…they’re long lasting, keeps my water cold, and they’re so cute and customizable.”
2. Shop Second Hand
Shopping second hand and thrifting truly helps the environment by eliminating waste and not supporting mass production of clothing. Thrifting or shopping second hand is a great way to reduce your environmental footprint and to not support the big industries which cause pollution and a lot of waste. Class II, Diana M. says, “I love thrifting. It's not only sustainable but limiting the fast fashion industry because when you buy clothes from brands, they often cater to specific fashion trends. Thrifting allows me to express individuality and find pieces that I will have for a while.”
Thrifting is not only a great way to get unique clothes, but to limit personal consumption of brand new clothing. Owning timeless second hand pieces ensures not contributing to a system in which clothes constantly go to waste.
3. Separate Your Trash
Sorting your waste can help save resources and with that, most materials can be recycled into new things. Recycling facilities can more efficiently and easily process and recycle materials, reducing the amount of waste that ends up in landfills. In our cafeteria we have different bins with photos which are easy to follow. Taking a few extra seconds to make sure your lunch trash is going in the right bins can be so helpful.
Following these simple steps can and will make a difference! Take a little time out of your day whether it’s sorting your trash or shopping for a new water bottle and the earth will thank you.
