March Madness Blends Old Appeals with New Additions

Updated: Dec 30, 2019

With this year’s competition came the addition of several features and competitions

By Desmond Keuper

This past March, discipuli once again took part in a variety of competitions to gain points for their classes in the annual March Madness event at TBLS. These contests ranged from themed, colorful dress-down days to various games and performances held in the auditorium. Upperclassmen were able to partake in old favorites such as the Quiz Bowl and Super Hero Day on March 19th, while new aspects were introduced such as Color Day on March 5th and the Lip Sync Battle, also on March 19th.

With the dress down days also came the addition of a new day, Class Color day. The premise was that each class was assigned a color (black and white for Class I, blue for Class II, red for Class III, and green for Class IV), and asked to dress in that color. While newer, this aspect of the competition was seamlessly adapted by discipuli. Class III won.

Perhaps the most memorable element of the competition was the series of competitions held in the auditorium. Returning were the Quiz Bowl and Minute to Win It. In addition, this year we saw the introduction of the Lip Sync battle, which involved representatives from each Class performing on stage. Class I’s performance of various songs by Queen in a sort of medley was the victor.

March Madness was concluded not with a competition, as has been the norm, but with a series of performances, including a song by Class II’s Emily La, a Saltare performance, a declamation by Class II’s Eden Moore, the spirit of competition was uplifted to a degree and the school was able to come together as a community. As Keller Peterson, Class IV, said, “I enjoyed it a lot. I really liked the school spirit at the performance on the final day.”

Overall, discipuli responded positively to these changes. Danielle Torres, Class I, said, “The fact that the fourth march madness wasn’t an actual activity but a performance was very entertaining. Also the quiz bowl ran much more smoothly this year.”

The final rankings were as follows: Class III with 16 points, Class IV with 17 points, Class II with 19 points, and Class I with an astounding 30 points.
