Try and imagine this. It's the late 1930’s in the UK. 10 people get a letter from an unknown person. They are invited, for various reasons, to a mysterious island surrounded by baseless rumors and the vast sea. They decide to go expecting nothing more than a job, perhaps even a desired holiday. However, what they are met with crushes their expectations and replaces them with fear, panic, and distrust. This is exactly what happens in “And Then There Were None”, a mystery book by Agatha Christie. After arriving on the island the guests start mysteriously dying. They cannot escape by boat because a dangerous storm has brewed both figuratively and literally. All the while a poem and the fates it imposes follows them around, chipping away at their remaining sanity. They are left to find the killer or be killed. And then? There were none.
I will admit that I was, at first, skeptical about just how good that this book could be. But as the world's bestselling mystery, it didn’t disappoint. The very beginning introduces you to the characters and gives you somewhat of a feel for who they are. Each of their personalities are unique and interesting. The characters are well written andas the story progressed, I got to learn more about them.Yet, there was always an air of mystery surrounding who they are. That sparks desire to know more about them, a desire to know exactly why they are here. However, throughout the book, that desire is met most of the time. You get to know who the characters are, but only to a certain extent and that makes the book so much more intriguing and adds to the eerie atmosphere.
Putting aside characters, there was the plot. It was, in every sense, genius. A bit cliche, at first glance, but nevertheless genius. I was always guessing, always on the edge of my seat. It's confusing, but the good kind. The ending explains everything perfectly, and finally solves the mystery, like a bow on a beautifully wrapped present.
I can’t really pick out anything really wrong with the book. Perhaps that's because I'm not a harsh critic. But the rating of 9/10 is deserved. I really did enjoy this book, and I consider it among the best I have read; for it was as thrilling as it was mysterious. A truly wonderful and skillful piece of writing.
The ten little soldier boys poem
Ten little Soldier boys went out to dine;
One choked his little self and then there were nine.
Nine little Soldier boys sat up very late;
One overslept himself and then there were eight.
Eight little Soldier boys traveling in Devon;
One said he’d stay there and then there were seven.
Seven little Soldier boys chopping up sticks;
One chopped himself in halves and then there were six.
Six little Soldier boys playing with a hive;
A bumblebee stung one and then there were five.
Five little Soldier boys going in for law;
One got into Chancery and then there were four.
Four little Soldier boys going out to sea;
A red herring swallowed one and then there were three.
Three little Soldier boys walking in the zoo;
A big bear hugged one and then there were two.
Two little Soldier boys playing with a gun;
One shot the other and then there was One.
One little Soldier boy left all alone;
He went out and hanged himself and then there were none.
